NDx-ListeriaControl: New knowledge summary on Listeria and upcoming regulatory changes

As part of the FHF project NDx-ListeriaControl, NordicDx – together with Nofima, Cermaq and Assaya – is developing a new rapid diagnostic system for detecting Listeria monocytogenes in the seafood industry. Nofima has now published a knowledge summary on Listeria and the stricter EU requirements that take effect on 1 July 2026.

As part of the FHF project NDx-ListeriaControl (project 910119), NordicDx, in collaboration with Nofima, Cermaq and Assaya, is developing a new rapid diagnostic system for detecting Listeria monocytogenes in the seafood industry.

An important part of the project is also to share knowledge with the industry. Nofima has therefore prepared a knowledge summary describing why Listeria monocytogenes is one of the greatest challenges in the production of ready-to-eat seafood products, and what consequences the upcoming regulatory changes will have for producers.

From 1 July 2026, stricter EU rules take effect, imposing higher requirements for the documentation and control of Listeria in ready-to-eat foods. Producers must increasingly be able to document that the bacterium does not grow to unacceptable levels throughout the product's entire shelf life. This increases the need for fast, reliable and user-friendly analysis methods that can be used directly in the production environment.
